Color It Yours

“Blue and green should never be seen except in the washing machine!” When I first heard this little rhyme, I was standing in the general store on Main Street in a little prairie village ironically called Rosetown. The town belied its name. Unlike a lush and vibrant flower, it was a dry and dusty place. Surface colors on buildings and signs had been bleached by the sun or worn away by the wind. Even still, Rosetown had a charm that only a small prairie town can muster. It was the middle of August and spending a week with family friends, who had a daughter my age, Main Street was our recreation center and the General Store, our mall. Shopping was limited but Ellen had spotted a pair of green shoes sitting on their box in the store window. She loved the style but wanted them in navy blue to match her new school clothes. Alas, the coveted shoes only came in one color - bright green. For me, it was not a problem - one could wear green with blue. My suggestion was promptly rejected with a rhyme.

I always thought that green and blue did perfectly well sitting next to each other. After all, think of trees and sky. Choosing colors for a knitting project that are both pleasing to the eye and in a balanced combination, is usually achieved by artistic instinct or by employing the scientific method of color theory. Most of us react to color emotionally, often attaching certain colors to memories, either pleasant or unpleasant, and respond positively or negatively when faced with a particular color combination.

We also absorb color suggestions that are displayed in nature and in the various visual media that enter our lives. You can’t help but notice the color combinations just outside our windows and doors, whether it be autumn’s subtle gradation of green leaves into shades of orange, gold and russet or spring tulips that pop up in all colors, some even changing color as they mature. These natural combinations can only inspire us to use these colors in a simple stripe or complex Fair Isle pattern. Interesting color combinations are displayed in cultivated landscapes and designed living rooms featured in gardening and home decorating magazines. Keeping a file of clippings and photos that display pleasing color arrangements can be used as a source of inspiration for a new knitting project.

Often color choices available for a chosen knitting yarn are somewhat limited by the shade range that is offered in that particular brand. In this case, a “basket” method can be quite helpful. Place all the colors of yarn that you think might work together for a particular project into a basket. Place the basket where it can be passed many times during a day. On some passes, stop and rearrange the colors, hiding more of one and exposing more of another. At other times, offer just a quick glance, or a long gaze. It may be days, but eventually the color combination becomes either a pleasing option or one to be discarded as unsuitable.

A more scientific approach to choosing a color involves the study of color theory as displayed in the color wheel. It certainly can be a useful aide as a starting point when deciding on a certain color combination. It will also act as a problem solver if a particular “artistic” color decision becomes difficult. The color wheel is made up of twelve colors and illustrates the relationships between colors. It is laid out so that any two primary colors (red, yellow, blue) are separated by the secondary colors (orange, violet, and green). Primary colors are basic and cannot be mixed from other elements. One can mix two primary colors to result in a secondary color. The remaining six colors are called tertiary colors and are the result of mixing one primary and one secondary color. Complementary colors lie opposite each other on the wheel. Pairing a color with its complementary color will make both colors appear vibrant. A color wheel is available at an art supply store along with other tools and publications that can aide in selecting and matching colors.

Whether it is artist’s instinct or science that you use, both can assist you in finding a balance of color that pleases you. There’s the key - it pleases you and will satisfy the picture you have in your “mind’s eye” of that new knitted garment.

Using A Digital Camera

Using a digital camera is easier than the using the older cameras that needed to be loaded with film. The screen provided on the camera shows you how the photo will be taken. After you purchase the camera it would be wise to read the instruction manual first. This because you might do the wrong thing when it comes to saving the image as well as deleting and other features including putting on the flash when it becomes dark or switching to dark mode.

If you are interested in buying a digital camera its important to know that it will be outdated by the time you get it home. New cameras are been produced everyday and if you are lucky the camera you get will hopefully stay the latest thing for a least a week. However most people don’t care how old their camera’s are.

When you do get the camera you want you at least know that you will be able to store your data in your PC or even your laptop. You can also make a hard copy of your pictures or the ones you like in a DVD or CD. Make sure you take care of your camera by following all the precautions provided as this kind of cameras are not as sturdy as the old ones and if it drops then you will have to buy a new one.
Its time you got yourself a digital camera if you don’t already have one. You don’t want to be left out as everyone moves on with technology.

Is It Safe To Sell Coins To A Dealer?

Coin collecting can be a lot of fun. This hobby which dates back to 2500 BC is much larger now since people are now able to collect currencies from other countries.

If a person decides to dispose of some of the coins in the collection, it is necessary to know its value by looking at a coin catalog or price guide. There are many ways to do this and one is looking for a coin dealer to do business with.

There are a lot of coin dealers around. Some can be found by asking the local coin club or a numismatist who can give a good referral while others can be found at an auction or in a coin exhibit. These people frequent such events looking for a good buy to add to an existing collection. A lot of these individuals can also be found on the web.

To be sure that the person is getting a good price from a coin dealer, it is an excellent idea to visit more than one place to find out who is willing to buy it at the highest price. If the person feels that the price is too low, then perhaps it is better to wait until another time since the value of coins depends on scarcity, condition and demand.

Some people think that doing business with a coin dealer isn’t a good idea since this person will offer to buy the coins at a lower price. This notion however is wrong since there are ways to ensure that this person will be honest.

To avoid by being conned by someone who claims to be a dealer, it is necessary to determine that this person is a member of the Professional Numismatist’s Guild. This organization is composed of the world’s renowned collectors of antique coins and paper money. Since there are strict rules that members abide by, one can be sure that the transaction is safe.

Coin dealers are not just there to buy something, these people may also offer for sale a coin that is valuable to the other person. By getting to know the dealer, an agreement can be reached that will benefit both parties, which does not always end mean buying, but also trading or bartering.

Everyone has the potential of making money even if this starts out with only a few coins. By knowing where to find these rare collectibles and doing business with a reputable dealer, one can be sure of making a profit – if not a small fortune.

How To Attack The Lakers "triangle" Offense? Run Smack Into The Celtics "angle" Defense

Copyright © 2008 Ed Bagley

The Boston Celtics recent NBA title effort not only set a record for the largest margin of victory in a championship game39 pointsbut also became the greatest one-season improvement in history.

A year ago the Celtics finished at 24-58 and dead last in the NBA Eastern Conference. This year they went 66-16, won the Atlantic Division title and the Eastern Conference title before disposing of the Los Angeles Lakers, 131-92, in the 6th and final playoff game to win their 17th NBA title and first since 1986, erasing a 22-year drought.

It was an incredible blowout of the Kobe Bryant-led Lakers. It seemed like everything the Celtics threw up went in following great ball movement, while the Lakers vaunted “triangle” offense stalled when the Celtics cut off its passing lanes. Los Angeles was left with Kobe getting the ball at mid-court and trying to single-handedly create points against 5 Celtics. Kobe went 7-of-22 from the field for 22 points.

“They were definitely the best defense I’ve seen the entire playoffs,” said Kobe. That Kobe, he’s as sharp as a tack.

Kobe had too little help to help the Lakers to the title, and take his place in history as the equal of Michael Jordan. Perhaps another year. LA Coach Phil Jackson, who had tied Boston’s legendary Coach Red Auerbach with 9 NBA titles, will also have to wait another year, assuming he can find some aggressive players on LA’s playgrounds.

Maybe someone like back-up James Posey, who came to play for the Celtics and went ugly on the Lakers. It was Posey here, Posey there, Posey everywhere. Draining 3’s. In your Laker face.

Boston General Manager Danny Ainge, a member of the last 1986 NBA championship team, made the key moves to make the Celtics charge to the title happen. Ainge picked up Ray Allen (an All-Star and one of the purest shooters in the NBA) from the Seattle Supersonics, and Kevin Garnett (a 10-time All-Star and 2004 MVP) from the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Ainge then added forward James Posey, center P. J. Brown and guard Sam Cassell. Suddenly, Coach Doc Rivers had a team that was hungry, mostly because All-Stars Paul Pierce, the Celtics go-to guy, Allen and Garnett had never won an NBA title.

The result in the title game found Garnett with 26 points and 14 boards, Allen scored 26, and Pierce, the Finals MVP, added 17. Guard Rajon Rondo had 21 points, 8 assists, 7 boards and 6 steals. In short, the Celtics brought a team to the playoffs and the Lakers brought Kobe.

It must have been so sweet for the Celtics, who were pushed to 7 games by both Atlanta and Cleveland before beating Detroit in 6 games to win the Eastern Conference title. And then came Kobe and the Lakers, and Boston rented a steamroller and put a whipping on the Lakers that will be gloated in Boston into at least the next century.

And so the Celtic season ends with an NBA title. Kevin Garnett became the NBA Defensive Player of the Year, an All-Defensive First Team pick and All-NBA First Team Player. Paul Pierce became an All-NBA Third Team Player and the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player.
